What is Legionella Testing?
Legionella Testing covers a variety of tests, controls & procedures, such as:
- Legionella testing to identify if someone has contracted Legionellosis. The most commonly used Legionella Testing laboratory test for diagnosis of Legionellosis is the urinary antigen test, which detects a molecule of the Legionella bacterium in urine. If the patient has pneumonia and the test is positive, then you should consider the patient to have Legionnaires' disease
- Legionella Sampling from Water Systems
- Legionella Risk Assessments
- Water Temperature Monitoring
- Chemical Monitoring from Water Systems

What is Legionella?
Legionella bacteria is commonly found in water. The bacteria multiply where temperatures are between 20-45°C and nutrients are available. The bacteria are dormant below 20°C and do not survive above 60°C.
Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially fatal type of pneumonia, contracted by inhaling airborne water droplets containing viable Legionella bacteria. Such droplets can be created, for example, by:
- Hot and Cold Water Outlets
- Cooling Systems
- Pools
- Process Water Systems
When Legionnaires’ Disease Testing may be required
Listed below are indications of when people should be tested for Legionnaires’ disease:
- People with severe pneumonia, especially those requiring intensive care
- Immunocompromised people with pneumonia symptoms
- People with a link to a setting with a confirmed source of Legionella or that has been associated with at least one confirmed case of Legionnaires’ disease
- Someone who has pneumonia symptoms and has travelled away from their home (within 14 days) before the onset of the symptoms
